Christian Living

During the month of June, we will learn about the virtue of Charity. Charity means being generous with our presence, time and money. Charity allows us to give freely without expecting anything in return. It can be as simple as giving someone a smile or on a larger scale as raising funds for an organization.

During the month of May, we will learn about the virtue of Compassion. Compassion is understanding and caring when someone is hurt or troubled. It is wanting to help, even if all you can do is listen and say kind words. You forgive mistakes and are a friend when someone needs a friend.

This month, we will learn about the Easter Story. Easter is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

During the month of April we will learn about the virtue of Justice. Justice is doing what is right and stopping what is wrong. Justice is focused on other people, making sure that they aren’t hurt or being taken advantage of. Justice protects the wounded, rescues the hurting and restores the broken, recognizing the equality and dignity of all. Justice is extended to people, animals and the environment.

During the month of March, we will learn about the virtue of Forgiveness. We remember that God our Father loves us unconditionally and forgives us for our mistakes; and we grow more like Jesus by the way we love and forgive one another. Ask to be forgiven, forgive others and forgive yourself because peace cannot exist without forgiveness.

Ash Wednesday (February 26, 2020) marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. As we prepare for Easter, we think of these four important words, prayer, penance, fasting and sacrifice (almsgiving).

During the month of February, the Grade 1 students will learn about the virtue of Honesty. Honesty is developed by example and through the constant emphasis of the importance of being truthful.

During the month of January, the Grade 1 students will learn about the virtue of Courage. "Being courageous isn't the absence of fear, but it's really the ability to act in spite of fear." You require fortitude, mental strength, to conquer fear. We need Courage to lead a Christian life, despite the pressures of society and to sustain all the other virtues.

The Road To Bethlehem

During the month of December, the Grade 1 students will experience the true meaning of Christmas. They will prepare for Advent, the coming of Christ and learn about the significance of the Advent Wreath. We will also learn about the virtue of Humility. When you are humble, you put God and others ahead of selfish interests. Humility allows us to see the worth of all people.

During the month of November, the Grade 1 students will learn about the virtue of Peacemaking. We remember those who fought and died for us in war and those who continue to fight battles. As Christians and responsible citizens, we are called upon to interact with others in a positive way and to resolve conflict peacefully. Through discussion and activities, the Grade 1 students will learn peacemaking strategies.

Dear God,

I'm thankful for all You give, for food, for love and a place to live. I thank You for my family too, and I want You to know that I love You.

Amen

During the month of October, the Grade 1 students will learn about the virtue of Respect. Everyday we challenge ourselves to show respect for others, for our environment and for ourselves, by working hard and doing our best to build God’s kingdom on earth. We all should show kindness, care, courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which are different ways of saying “respect.” Respect should come first and foremost from ourselves. We also deserve to be treated with respect by everyone we meet. Through prayer and practice, we can get better at respecting ourselves, those around us and our environment.

WISDOM - BEAVER

The building of a community is entirely dependent on gifts that are given to each member by the creator and how these gifts are used. The Beaver's example of using his sharp teeth for cutting trees and branches to build his dams and lodges expresses this teaching. If he did not use his teeth, the teeth would continue to grow until they became useless, ultimately making it impossible for him to sustain himself. The same can be said for human beings. One's spirit will grow weak if it is not fulfilling its use. When used properly, however, these gifts contribute to the development of a peaceful and healthy community.

TRUTH - TURTLE

To know truth is to know and understand all of the original laws as given by the Creator and to remain faithful to them. It is said that in the beginning when the Creator made man and gave him the seven sacred laws, the Grandmother Turtle was present to ensure that the laws would never be lost or forgotten. .

HONESTY - SABE

Long ago, there was a giant called Kitch-Sabe. Kitch-sabe walked among the people to remind them to be honest to the laws of the creator and honest to each other. The highest honour that could be bestowed upon an individual was the saying "There walks an honest man. He can be trusted." To be truly honest was to keep the promises one made to the Creator, to others and to oneself. The Elders would say, "Never try to be someone else; live true to your spirit, be honest to yourself and accept who you are the way the Creator made you."

Courage-Bear

The Bear provides many lessons in the way it lives, but courage is the most important teaching it offers. Though gentle by nature, the ferociousness of a mother Bear, when one of her cubs is approached, is the true definition of courage. To have the mental and moral strength to overcome fears that prevent us from living our true spirit as human beings is a great challenge that must be met with the same vigour and intensity as a mother Bear protecting her cub. Living of the heart and living of the spirit is difficult, but the Bear's example shows us how to face any danger to achieve these goals.

Humility-Wolf

Recognizing and acknowledging that there is a higher power than man and it is known as the Creator is to be deemed truly humble. To express deference or submission to the Creator through the acceptance that all beings are equal is to capture the spirit of humility. The expression of this humility is manifested through the consideration of others before ourselves. In this way, the Wolf became the teacher of this lesson. He bows his head in the presence of others out of deference, and once hunted, will not take of the food until it can be shared with the pack. His lack of arrogance and respect for his community is a hard lesson, but integral in Indigenous ways.

Love-Eagle

To feel true love is to know the Creator. He is considered the Father of all children and the giver of human life. Love given to the Great Spirit is expressed through love of oneself, and it is understood that if one cannot love oneself, it is impossible to love anyone else.

Respect - Buffalo

The Buffalo, through giving its life and sharing every part of its being, showed the deep respect it had for the people. No animal was more important to the existence of Indigenous families than this animal, and its gift provided shelter, clothing, and utensils for daily living. Indigenous peoples believed themselves to be true caretakers of the great herds and developed a sustainable relationship with the Buffalo resulting in a relationship that was a true expression of respect.

The Seven Sacred Teachings, also known as the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers, is a set of traditional, Indigenous teachings that have been passed down orally from generation to generation. These teachings reinforce the teachings of our Catholic faith. Each teaching honours one of the basic virtues to help us live a good life: Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth. Each of these Sacred Teachings is represented by a different animal and remind us of the connections we hold with land, nature and animals.

During the month of September, the Grade 1 students will learn about the virtue of inclusivity. Jesus welcomed all people and invited them to follow Him. When we welcome and include others, we create a sense of belonging. We will also focus on what we have in common, while respecting the differences that make us unique.
