Intro
This report is about why my ancestors decided to leave England and come to New Zealand. My ancestors, Mary Eleanor Sampson and Charles Sampson were 24 when they made the voyage from England to NZ and I am here to tell you the reasons they left England. In this report, I will be covering push and pull factors and will be briefing the way their life was when they left England and how their life changed when they arrived in NZ
Biography
Charles Sampson was a rope maker in Dorset who was a very poor man. Charles met Mary Eleanor Gollop who was the daughter of Robert Gollop a very rich man who owned a lot of land In their district, Charles and Mary fell in love eventually marrying. And had a child named Marina Sampson who was the only child born in England and when they arrived in NZ they had nine more children. They left England on the second of November 1841 they left on a ship named the Timandra and arrived in
NZ on the twenty-third of February 1842.
The first push factor for Charles and Mary Sampson was the industrial revolution in the 1830s when England moved everything towards the city and started using machines and that affected
Where they lived because they lived in a rural area where everyone moved to the city and left the rural areas. And there was no need for rope makers or land out in the country because everyone was in the city and that was where the people were so after taking a huge blow to the rope business. I assume that they left because of the less demand for rope in England because of the industrial revolution and more demand in NZ because it was just discovered by Europeans and needed to build new towns and houses.
The second push factor is that the year before they left crime rates in rural areas such as Dorset went up thirty per cent due to poor law and the fact that the unemployment rate went up forty per cent. I concluded that their little community had been affected by the crime, so they had to leave also in the 1830s there was poor law in England and there were things called swing riots in country towns where people committed arson, murder and damage to machines that cost a lot of money, why because of the poor law in the 1830s so it made the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. The whole family must have been affected by this because the whole family on Mary's side left.
I think the reason they left England was because of the industrial revolution. Why? Because I think that Charles was out of a job because the industrial revolution changed how everything worked and they started using chain instead of a rope for the machines and rope makers were less important and then he was out of a job and had to feed his new family then a new land opened up and they needed rope makers plus Mary's family were going and her Dad offered to pay for the trip so his daughter could also go. So they decided to board the Timandra and set sail on the second of November 1841.
The first pull factor for Charles and Mary Sampson was that they needed rope makers in NZ because NZ was just discovered to Europeans there was a significant need for rope makers such as Charles so the English government probably targeted people like Charles and promised them land so they could persuade people to go to NZ then they could build an empire in NZ so by 1841 the government just signed the treaty of Waitangi so they could come to NZ and start a city I concluded that Charles was in need to leave Dorset and get a job so when NZ was discovered it was a new opportunity for Charles and the land came as a bonus.
The second pull factor for Charles and Mary was that Mary's family was going and that Mary's Dad offered to pay for them to go so that he could have his whole family there. I think that Charles was already thinking about moving to NZ and when Mary's Dad offered this he jumped at the opportunity because he needed a job and was wanting to leave Dorset because of the crime rates and riots because it was not safe. Mary's Dad desperately wanted his family to go to NZ with him; he probably set his heart on going to NZ.
The Main Pull factor is probably the second because Charles and Mary Sampson were thinking about leaving anyway and when Mary's Dad offered to pay he thought knew he was going to go. The other pull factor is also important because he was most likely targeted and offered land in NZ and he was needed in NZ so both the pull factors complement each other by the government offering land and a job and Mary's Dad offering to pay.
In conclusion, Mary and Charles Sampson were pushed out of England by unemployment, crime and riots in places such as Dorset, the pull factors are a major role in the move from England to New Zealand. By the English government pulling rope makers such as Charles out of country towns and offering them a once in a lifetime opportunity, And when Marys Dad offered to pay for them to come to NZ it was just impossible to turn the offer down.
