Sexism Speech Inquiry #4

Did you know an American woman makes 80 cents to a man's dollar? Sexism is still a big problem in our society, sexism can affect anyone, no matter the gender or sexualiity. Sexism can be delivered in many different forms, sexism can also be found in many different places. Sexism is mostly targeted towards females, but can affect other sexualitys and genders.

Sexism is the act of stereotyping a gender in some form of communication, or body language. Sexism can be found in many different places, such as: Schools, Work places, and homes. An exampe of sexism could be that a nonbinary person may experience sexism when someone makes assumptions about them based on sex assigned at birth. “I bet you think this song is about you. Don't you don't you don't you?” The message in this song is explaining how some men think they are “superior” to women, Carly Simon points these sexist visions out in the song to try to spread the word.

There is laws for no discrimination based on religion & race. But not based on sexual oreintation and sex. To this day, lots of laws are very sexist, a law in Northern Nigeria, a man is allowed to hit his wife for the purpose of “correcting” her. And in Iran, a woman can be jailed for ignoring the country’s strict dress code. In 1972 the Equal Pay act was formed, so in New Zealand all genders must be paid equally, depending on their role and job. But in homes sexism is still a problem. Sexist laws are a big problem in today's society, but there aren't many things being done to mitigate these sexist laws.

There are many things we can do to limit the acts of sexism in our day to day lives, there are multiple ways to do this. Supporting the victims of sexism is the most important. We can also face the offenders themselves, something small might even help, e.g “I don’t think that’s true at all” or talk to the offenders about it. Bystander support can also help put an end to Sexism, bystander support can be supporting someone you might not even know, this can be done “in the moment” or after. E.g “We don’t accept sexism here.”

42% of US working women have faced gender discrimination on their job because of their gender. And over 90% of people in our society today hold some sort of bias against females. 90%. Sexism has been a thing for more than we can remember, Sexism was most common from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. Did you know in the 1800’s, only men could vote for elections?

In conclusion, sexism is a big problem in our society today, and many people are victims of it. We can help the victims out by supporting them. Sexist laws are still a thing, and countries in poverty are the most commonly affected by it. We can stop sexism. Thank you for listening.
