Google Meet within Google Classroom

The video to the left will walk you through how to get started with Google Meet by linking from Google Classroom. If you use this method, students will not be able to join the Google Meet without you. This will place a permanent link at the top of your Google classroom that students can use to join.

Ending a Google Meet

Most districts have Google Meet setup so that students can not start a Google Meet and participate in unsupervised video conferencing. At the end of the Google Meet you ask all students to disconnect. If they do not disconnect, you can manually remove them from the Google Meet by:

  • Click on the "People" button in the top right corner of the Google Meet screen.

  • Find the students who have not left.

  • Click on the "down" arrow to the right of the student.

  • Click the "minus sign" which is the remove button to the right of the student name (shown in the yellow highlight).

  • Once all of the students have left the Google Meet, wait 60 seconds for the rejoin timeout to expire. Then you can then safely disconnect without any worry about students joining without a teacher present.

Removing or Muting Participants as the Host

A participant from the domain of the organized video meeting can remove another participant.

In a video meeting, click the "down" arrow , hover over the person, and click the "remove" which is the "minus sign".

If you’re experiencing feedback or background noise during a video meeting, you might want to mute other people’s microphones.

To mute other people, next to the person’s thumbnail, hover over their volume icon and click "Mute "or the "Microphone" icon.

Tips

  • For privacy reasons, you cannot unmute another person. Ask the participant to unmute their audio.

  • To mute or unmute yourself, at the bottom of the video window click Mute .

  • Phone participants can press *6 to unmute their phone.

  • Any participant can be muted, including people who dial-in using a phone.

Dial-in participants

  • Phone participants always press *6 to mute or unmute their phone

  • If someone else mutes you, you can only unmute using *6 (this is different than the mute icon on the screen).
