Unit 1 & 2

Course Description

It is strongly advised that students can play an instrument to a reasonable standard if undertaking this subject. Students will present works on one or more instruments in group contexts. They also study the work of other performers and explore strategies to optimise their own approach to performance.

Students in music performance will learn to play different styles of music and learn to address challenges in presenting music for performance. Students will study aural, theory and analysis concepts to develop their musicianship skills and apply this knowledge when preparing and presenting performances.

Unit 1: Music Performance

The unit focuses on building performance and musicianship skills. They will work on building technical skill on an instrument in addition to developing skills in presenting different styles of music. Students will study aural, theory and analysis concepts to develop their musicianship skills and apply this knowledge when preparing music performances.

Unit 2: Music Performance

Students will build upon the skills and knowledge covered in unit one. They will also develop skills in performing previously unseen notated music and improve on technical aspects of playing an instrument.

Students will also devise an original improvisation or composition.

Outcomes - On completion of this unit students will be able to:

Perform in group and solo context

Discuss and demonstrate techniques designed to improve performance

Understand aspects of music theory. Discuss and analyse music using proper music terminology.

Perform a solo over a given chord progression.
