Course Outline

Media Production focuses on the way our world is represented and how stories are told through communication technologies such as photography, television, film, video, newspapers, radio, podcasting, advertising and social media. In this subject you will learn how audiences, purposes and ideas are constructed in each of these technologies and you will investigate the power and influence of these media artworks. Once you have built an understanding of how these media forms are constructed, you will have the opportunity create and explore your own ideas through various media forms, including photography, film and advertisement. Like all art forms, media arts has the ability to engage, inspire and enrich you and your imagination, encouraging you to explore your creative and expressive potential.

This course has a strong emphasis on production, both individually and collaboratively. This firsthand experience in creating your own media products will assist you to analyse the media from a different perspective. Through creating, producing and analysing media, you will develop production and critical thinking skills, as well as a deeper understanding about the important role of the media in our society.

Media Production

In semester two, students will learn about the power and influence of the media in our society. Students will identify current issues of interest and plan, develop and produce their own social media campaign to address the issue. Students will then learn to think critically about the manipulation of television, including reality TV. Students will how to analyse the technical conventions of television and how these can influence an audience. Students will then use their skills in production, film making and collaboration to plan, produce, edit their own reality production.
