Course Outline
Media arts focuses on the way our world is represented and how stories are told through communication technologies such as photography, television, film, video, newspapers, radio, podcasting, advertising and social media. In this subject you will learn how audiences, purposes and ideas are constructed in each of these technologies and you will investigate the power and influence of these media artworks. Once you have built an understanding of how these media forms are constructed, you will have the opportunity create and explore your own ideas through various media forms, including photography, film and advertisement. Like all art forms, media arts has the ability to engage, inspire and enrich you and your imagination, encouraging you to explore your creative and expressive potential.
This course has a strong emphasis on production, both individually and collaboratively. This firsthand experience in creating your own media products will assist you to analyse the media from a different perspective. Through creating, producing and analysing media, you will develop production and critical thinking skills, as well as a deeper understanding about the important role of the media in our society.
Introduction to Media Arts
In this semester students learn about the history of photography and will gain the skills to create their own photographic artworks using DSLR cameras. Students will also learn about the production elements used in film to analyse how directors use media codes in cinema. Students will also learn about the power of advertising across print and digital media and will have the opportunity to create their own advertisements in the form of print media.
Semester 1 Outcomes - On completion of this unit students will be able to:
use appropriate media language to communicate technical aspects of photographic production and demonstrate their technical skills by replicating a set of photographic images by employing photography and editing skills.
analyse the technical, symbolic and story conventions of a film, pertaining to its genre and audience. Students will analyse why particular media codes and conventions were utilised for particular purposes and audiences.
understand how advertising strategies and techniques are used across various platforms, including print and digital media, to position a target audience. Students will then use their understanding of these conventions and participate in the planning, production and evaluation process to create their own media product.
