Foundation Mathematics

Year 10 Year Long Subject

Course Description

The Foundation Mathematics course is designed in line with the Victorian Curriculum that covers basic understanding in Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Statistics. The topics covered will be: Number Skills, Space and Time, Financial Mathematics & Probability. Students will be utilising Scientific calculators.

On completion of this semester students will be able to progress through the Victorian Curriculum strands of:

Number and Algebra 

On completion of this strand of mathematics, students will have further developed their number skills in relation to rates, ratios and percentages. They will be able to apply these skills to financial mathematics applications.

Geometry and Measurement

On completion of this strand of mathematics, student will be able to read map coordinates, interpret scale - enlarging and reducing objects and understand time scales using 24 hour time, digital and analogue clocks.

Statistics and Probability

On completion of this strand of mathematics, students will have explored probabilities from a perspective of decision making. They will have covered relative frequencies and basic probability calculations.

This course leads into VCE Unit 1 & 2 Foundation Mathematics or VCAL Numeracy. Students completing 10 Foundation Mathematics are able to pursue a variety of career paths, such as: Trades - building, early childhood, hair and beauty, plumbing, painting, Hospitality, Retail.
