Course Description

This course will introduce students to sociological theory and meta-language by looking at the role of institutions in creating social beings. The focus of area of study one of  Sociology is the 'Agents of Socialisation', this entails learning about key theorists and theories, concepts of self with respect to identity and belonging, and the role of family and culture in an individual's life. These topics involve highlighting the roles of prejudice and stereotypes in social institutions, the importance of nature versus nurture in construction our primary and secondary socialisation and how the social construct of marriage and divorce and evolved and changed throughout history. 

In area of study two, students are introduced to the ways society changes, through acts of positive deviance which lead to paradigm shifts to the status quo and the occurrence of social movements. This particular area of study involves sociological research and inquiry into a key social movement in modern history. 

In preparation for VCE sociology, undertaking sociology at the year 10 level, will familiarise students with sociological theory, terminology and inquiry, as well as key skills such as planning and constructing extended responses. Students will look at how societal norms and values are created, how individuals become social beings, how society is forever changing and the causes and consequences these changes have on the individual and society.
