Unit 3 & 4
Course Description :
VCE Units 3 and 4 EAL contributes to the development of literate individuals capable of critical and creative thinking, aesthetic appreciation and creativity. This study also develops students’ ability to create and analyse texts, moving from interpretation to reflection and critical analysis. Unit 3 comprises of three Area of Study: Reading and Creating texts, Analysing Arguments and Listening Task. Unit 4 comprises of two areas of study: Reading and Comparing texts and Presenting Arguments.
Unit 3
Outcomes - On completion of these units students will be able to:
produce an analytical interpretation of a selected text, and a creative response to a different selected text.
comprehend a spoken text.
analyse and compare the use of argument and persuasive language in texts that present a point of view on an issue currently debated in the media.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment 1: Reading & Comparing - Text response essay - After Darkness
Assessment 2: Listening to texts - Short answer responses and note form summaries to two audio texts
Assessment 3: Analysing Argument - Short answer responses and written analysis
Assessment 4: Creative task - The Seven Stages of Grieving
Unit 4
Outcomes - On completion of these units students will be able to:
produce a detailed comparison which analyses how two selected texts present ideas, issues and themes.
construct and present a sustained and reasoned point of view on an issue currently debated in the media.

Assessment 1: Reading & Comparing - Comparative Essay - The Seven Stages of Grieving & The Longest Memory
Assessment 2: Presenting Argument - Oral Presentation + Written Explanation
External Examination
Examination 1 (worth 50% overall)
