Te Whare Hauora - Counselling

Kia ora e te whānau,

At Tarawera High School we provide a safe and confidential space for you to come and seek help. It may just be a listening ear or it may require outside help. Don't hesitate to reach out.

We currently have a team of counsellors who are able to support you - Whāea Kaz has recently joined the team and is enrolled in her Masters of Counselling course at the University of Waikato. We also have Whāea Angela who works with us two days a week. Cathy Cook also supports the team one day a week, she is our Educational Psychologist.

Confidentiality is very important to us. What we talk about is kept in confidence unless there is a serious risk to yourself or someone else. Then you will be clearly informed about what will happen.

What counsellors do;

Provide a safe, confidential environment for students.
Listen to concerns.
Assist students to make the changes they want.
Teach skills for living (e.g. anger management, problem solving, decision making, motivation, effective communication).
Assist with alcohol/drug concerns, stress, plan and set goals, family break-up, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, coping with change, fear and anxiety, or any other concern.
Arrange for outside agencies if necessary.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Anything shared in the safety of our space stays confidential, meaning we will not tell others (your parents, friends or teachers, etc.).

UNLESS - You are hurting yourself -You are hurting someone else - Someone is hurting you -Someone you know is hurting someone else.

You will always be told first and encouraged to be part of the decision making for what happens next if this occurs!

Whānau support and involvement is encouraged when appropriate.

You are welcome to bring a support person with you to your appointment.
