March Mammal Madness
Welcome to March Mammal Madness. This is a global event that involves people of all ages, even adults. This event is modeled after the NCAA Basketball March Madness - but it is FILLED with science. Over the course of February/March students are learning about interesting animals (although they are weirdly not all mammals), animal interactions, their scientific names, habitats, adaptations, trophic level, effects of human impact.ย - plus it is SO much fun! On the nights listed on the calendar below, a fictional (but science-based) battle happens on Twitter (it plays out like the old radio days. Students DO NOT have to participate on Twitter, but if you wanted to, follow the hashtag #2023MMM - I will give them recaps and results the following days and I will post those recap videos here as well. ย I am sharing all of our important resources below and I hope you will play along. I am all about some evidence based science conversation at the dinner table. Good luck!
P.S. The MMM tagline is "If you're learning, you're winning"!!
7.MS-LS2-2. Describe how relationships among and between organisms in an ecosystem can be
competitive, predatory, parasitic, and mutually beneficial and that these interactions are found across multiple ecosystems.
7.MS-LS1-4. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how characteristic animal behaviors and
specialized plant structures increase the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants.
8.MS-LS4-4. Use a model to describe the process of natural selection, in which genetic variations of
some traits in a population increase some individualsโ likelihood of surviving and reproducing in a
changing environment. Provide evidence that natural selection occurs over many generations.
