Myth 1:
Only Health Science Academy students do externals (exams)
Fact 1:
ALL year 11 students have to do externals. HSA students usually do two more externals.
What can HSA do for you?
Extra resources, tutorials, developing good study habits, supportive studying environment
Myth 2:
Joining the Health Science Academy means that I have to give up on all the things I like to do.
Fact 2:
In year 11, it is compulsory to take English, Maths, and Science. You can still choose two options, and HSA asks of you to take Biology as one of them. It's all about managing your time and interests.
Myth 3:
HSA is only for those that want to become doctors and nurses
Fact 3:
There are more than 80 careers in the health field. You do not have to work inside the hospital to be involved in health. Some of my favourites are case managers and biomedical engineers.
Myth 4:
HSA is only about studying
Fact 4:
HSA is about opportunities, exposure, support, staying informed, and working together.
We also work together with HSA from James Cook High school, Onehunga college, Waitakere College, Auckland Girls Grammar, Tamaki College.
We must remember that as we enter into year 11, we need to start thinking more about the importance of our academics for our future. Most of our careers require tertiary study.
However, we also understand that exposure to different opportunities will motivate and help you to stay engaged.
Myth 5:
HSA is only for the "Sciency, brainy" ones
Fact 5:
Unsure whether the "Sciency, brainy" is even a word, but we get the point. Yes, there is indeed a stereotype attached to those joining HSA as you will be academically challenged and pushed. However, it is time to stop making excuses. We do not let the stereotypes define who we are, just like we don't let others define Otara community. It's all about developing your potential.
