What is shadowing?
Shadowing is simply the process of familiarizing oneself with what being a healthcare provider is like. This can be an enriching experience as you figure out whether being a healthcare professional is the right fit for you. It is also an opportunity to develop meaningful professional connections that may potentially set you up for long-term success: whether it be a recommendation letter, a job opportunity, or simply a deeper understanding of the industry. You may be expected to take notes and even help out at the clinic - both of which are valuable experiences that you can talk about in the future.
How do you get shadowing experience?
The best way to acquire shadowing opportunities is to use your network: family friends, your dentist/pediatrician, or anybody that you have a connection with. Ask if they know healthcare professionals in some capacity so that you may be introduced to them. This is one of the reasons why forging relationships with others is an integral part of networking.
Without robust social connections, shadowing is still possible! You can always email hospitals/clinics and call the doctor's office to inquire about shadowing. Make sure you introduce yourself, prepare a resume, and have a timeframe ready in mind. Ask about dress code (some clinics require business casual and others may allow scrubs), do background research on the healthcare provider beforehand, and explain why you're interested!
Given the current circumstances, finding shadowing opportunities is not easy. Many hospitals and clinics may be putting a pause on having students present. However, there are plenty of virtual shadowing resources available in the meantime. Here are some links to get you started!
