News from 2020

11/2020: New Publication in Elsevier's Journal of Advanced Engineering Informatics: Advancing post-earthquake structural evaluations via a sequential regression-based predictive mean matching for enhanced forecasting in the context of missing data. Paal Research Group Ph.D. student Huan Luo is the first author on the paper.

11/2020: Dr. Paal gave two virtual presentations: one at George Mason University for their graduate seminar and a second at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

10/2020: Paal Research Group Ph.D. student Huan Luo successfully defended his thesis, "A Data-Driven Computing Framework for Structural Seismic Response Prediction"! Dr. Huan Luo is now on faculty at China Three Gorges University! Congrats Huan!

09/2020: Dr. Paal was awarded a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs for work on the Veteran’s Legacy Geographic Information System: Citizen Science Approach to Extended Memorialization Digitally. This work is a collaborative effort with several researchers across TAMU. The PI of the project is Dr. Stacey Lyle.

09/2020: Dr. Paal presented her work towards leveraging existing knowledge and AI to enhance our understanding of structural performance at UIUC.

08/2020: New Publication in Wiley's Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering journal: Reducing the effect of sample bias for small datasets with double-weighted support vector transfer regression. Paal Research Group Ph.D. student Huan Luo is the first author on the paper. Read it here!

08/2020: Dr. Paal presented her work virtually to the American Concrete Institute Strategic Development Council.

01/2020: Dr. Paal was granted an NSF CAREER award for her project Leveraging Existing Knowledge and Artificial Intelligence to Understand the Performance of Civil Infrastructure Under Extreme Hazard Loads. The award is provided by the National Science Foundation Engineering for Critical Infrastructure (ECI) Program. Dr. Paal is the sole PI of the project.

01/2020: New Publication in Elsevier's Journal of Automation in Construction: Deep learning for site safety: real-time detection of personal protective equipment. Paal Research Group Ph.D. student Nipun Nath, Dr. Paal, and collaborator Dr. Bezhadan from Construction Science at TAMU are co-authors on the publication. Read it here!
