Research

Dr. Paal's research experience and interests are in the general field of structural engineering with an emphasis on the development of novel methods in computer vision and machine learning for applications in object detection, damage detection, and natural hazards risk assessment, at the same time, expanding into emerging cross-disciplinary areas that address broad challenges in energy, climate change (and its impact on ageing infrastructure) and multi-hazard risk assessment. The research projects and products outlined here demonstrate the impact of emerging technologies in the field of civil engineering. Dr. Paal and her research group work in interdisciplinary environments, reaching faculty and students across Computer Science, Architecture, Construction Science, Aerospace Engineering, Geology and Geosciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial Systems Engineering, and Material Sciences.
