Eligibility
The National Endowment for the Humanities determine the criteria for participating in the Summer Institute.
Here is a brief overview of the most important information relating to eligibility (see below for more detailed information).
You are eligible to apply if you are:
• a United States citizen
• a resident of U.S. jurisdictions; or
• a foreign national who has been residing in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline (March 6, 2026).
Please note: The NEH requires all participants to attend the entire two weeks of the institute (June 1 – June 12) in person. For comprehensive information regarding participant expectations, see the link below.
Unfortunately, NEH regulations do not permit auditors for the Summer Institute.
Funding
All participants of the summer institute will receive a $2,200 stipend to help defray the costs of participation (related to travel, accommodation and meals in College Station). Please note that this is taxable income.
Additional Information
The NEH does not require participants to have an advanced degree at the time of their participation.
Knowledge of ancient Greek is not required to participate in the Summer Institute, although there will be opportunities for those with reading knowledge of ancient Greek to discuss relevant texts in the original language with other participants.
