Grades 3-5
Gifted students will be grouped together for instruction. Differentiation will happen within the regular classroom for language arts and math. Teachers with specialized professional development in meeting the needs of gifted students will be responsible for this instruction, with the support of the gifted coordinator. Additionally two days a week, gifted students will attend GRIT class with Mrs. Pearson. This pull out program will focus on critical thinking, problem solving, and meeting the social emotional needs of gifted students. All students identified gifted according to state gifted criteria in either the superior cognitive area, reading, and/or math qualify for this service.
Grades 6 - 8
Year long gifted classes are provided in math and language arts. These are replacement classes for the regular math and language arts classes. They follow a different curriculum than the regular math and ELA courses. Math class in 7th or 8th grade is a single subject acceleration into Algebra, a high school course. All students identified gifted according to state gifted criteria in either the superior cognitive area or in the content area in which they are to be served qualify for this service.
Grades 9-12
High school courses do not require a student to obtain a gifted identification in order for a student to participate in enrichment opportunities or advanced classes. Students with gifted identification have access to any Honors , AP, and College Credit Plus opportunities. During scheduling time each winter, students must communicate to their counselor which courses they would like to enroll in for the next school year.
Students should contact their school counselor for additional information. If a parent/guardian would like to have their student assessed for cognitive ability, we can schedule that testing with the understanding the identification would yield no additional service.
If at any time a parent or student wishes to consider withdrawal from gifted programs or services, a written request is required. The request should be submitted to the building administrator and/or the gifted coordinator.
A parent/guardian signature is required for withdrawal from programs or services.
Re-entry to the program may occur in the next school year upon written request. (Ohio Revised Code Section 3324.03)
