Mathematics Fellows in International Schools (MFIS) is a 2 year Mathematics program for teachers of mathematics in Grades 9-12. The program is a coherent sequence of five Institutes designed to expand teachers’ understanding of the AERO/ Common Core Progressions and how to use the mathematical practices to bring order and logic to the content they teach.
Participants will acquire a deeper understanding of the impact of the mathematical practices on student learning and classroom instructional practice by:
- Examining the development of math concepts through the grades to “look back to move forward,” and link prior knowledge to the new concepts being developed;
- Unpacking the practices: explaining, representing, and considering what they look like in the classroom;
- Using the progressions to identify sequences of instructional experiences which promote optimal student learning
- Examining how learning progressions help in monitoring and addressing student progress towards targeted understandings
- Exploring rich mathematical tasks and analyzing the practices involved
- Adapting, developing, and using these high cognitive demand tasks to gather evidence of student learning.

- A letter of interest expressing a 2-year commitment to the program
- A letter of recommendation from current school
Certificate Requirements
Participants who complete all five institutes will be awarded a certificate from Project AERO.
