In the Grade 6 ELA curriculum, students explore essential questions - such as “how do you find courage in the face of fear?” or “what can you learn from seeing the world through an animal’s eyes?” - through Into Literature’s thematic collections of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and multimedia texts. Students learn and use a variety of strategies to improve as active and engaged readers, including Notice and Note strategies. Additionally, students engage in close reading and practice annotation skills. To help them develop as writers, students will read and analyze mentor texts, learn from writing models, and reflect on and revise their own writing. The core novel for the course is The Lightning Thief.

Students learn and use a variety of strategies to improve as active and engaged readers, including Notice and Note strategies. Additionally, students engage in close reading and practice annotation skills. To help them develop as writers, students will read and analyze mentor texts, learn from writing models, and reflect on and revise their own writing. The core novel for the course is MIles Morales: Spider-Man, and students will additionally engage in a choice-based book study of one of the following titles: Where the Mountain Meet the Moon, My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich, Planet Middle School, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, or A Wrinkle in Time.

To help them develop as writers, students will read and analyze mentor texts, learn from writing models, and reflect on and revise their own writing. The core novel for the course is The Outsiders. In addition, students will read one of the following novels or memoirs about the Holocaust: Night, Milkweed, The Book Thief, Number the Stars, Maus, Daniel Half-Human or The Devil’s Arithmetic.
