Music Education is important in our children's lives because it teaches focus, persistence, relieves stress, teaches artistry, and provides a rich experience in emotional understanding and expression. Students in Third Grade music will have the opportunity to sing, play instruments and move to music during each class. Grade 3 begins learning more about musical form and harmony, how to play ostinatos, more about tempo and musical dynamic markings and how to read note names on the musical staff. Third graders will have one grade level performance this year (please see home page for dates and info). Practice links for the performance songs will be linked on this page (scroll down). Third Grade learning targets are provided on the image to the left.
A key component to reading music is being able to perform and understand rhythm syllables. Many types of systems are used to teach children how to read rhythms. At Shadow Lake Elementary, your child is learning to read rhythms using the Kodaly method, after a Hungarian Composer, Zoltan Kodaly. Each symbol has a name that is recited as we count our rhythms.
The left image shows examples of rhythm-reading excerpts your child is asked to learn and perform during music class.
