Music Education is important in our children's lives because it teaches focus, persistence, relieves stress, teaches artistry, and provides a rich experience in emotional understanding and expression. Students in Second Grade music will have the opportunity to sing, play instruments and move to music during each class. Second graders being learning more about musical form and harmony, and add pitches So and La to better understand how melodies are written. Second graders will have one grade level performance this year (please see home page for dates and info) Second Grade learning targets are provided on the image to the left.
A key component to reading music is being able to perform and understand rhythm syllables. Many types of systems are used to teach children how to read rhythms. At Shadow Lake Elementary, your child is learning to read rhythms using the Kodaly method, after a Hungarian Composer, Zoltan Kodaly. Each symbol has a name that is recited as we count our rhythms.
The left image shows examples of rhythm-reading excerpts your child is asked to learn and perform during music class.
