Overview
A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species is extracted and placed into the genes of another plant or animal. The genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, or animals. Because this involves the transfer of genes, GMOs are also known as “transgenic” organisms.
Consider:
Are they safe? Who determines this?
Must they be labeled for consumers?
Why are organisms modified?
Are there any unintended consequences to the environment?
