Weather

In the USA, weather is a very popular small talk topic. We talk about it with people we know and people we don't know. It is a very neutral topic but is always being discussed. I'm sure you know basic weather vocabulary, but do you know that there are different words to describe rain, snow, wind, etc.? WATCH the video to review / learn new weather vocabulary and phrases. Write them down. WATCH and LISTEN only to the video the first time. Then the second time, you can stop the video and WRITE DOWN new vocabulary. WATCH it a third time. Watching the video can be done over several days.

WEATHER VOCABULARY - Study the vocabulary below before next week.

Do the worksheet below. Match the pictures or temperature on the left with the answers on the right. The first one is done for you. 1) F ( the picture is of scattered or patchy showers= some here, some there).

Temperatures - When you watch tv, the news always shows weather forecasts for the day and the next 3 - 5 days. In America, we use Fahrenheit; in most other countries, they use Celsius to talk about the temperatures. Look at the chart below comparing the two. In America, forecasters talk about temperatures being in the upper, lower or mid '60s'. Upper 60s would be 67 - 69 degrees, mid would be 64 - 66 degrees, and lower would be 61 - 63 degrees. (this is also on the weather vocabulary list)

They also use the words 'highs' and 'lows' referring to temperature. Example: Highs will be in the upper 40s. Lows in the mid 20s.

**Look at the chart below comparing Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Comparing the scales

This picture compares Celsius and Fahrenheit scales on a thermometer.

Celsius and Fahrenheit thermometers side by side compare the two scales. The freezing point of water is 0 Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The boiling point of water is 100 Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Study the worksheet below and compare Fahrenheit on the left to Celsius on the right. You can find the temperature in Fahrenheit by using the mathematical formula at the top of the page OR looking at the thermometer and 'estimating' the temperature. Estimating may not be the exact temperature but will be close.

What is the temperature in Fahrenheit? Use the mathematical formula or estimation to answer. **If this is new for you, give it a try. Do your best.

Example: 60 degrees Celsius = ? degrees Fahrenheit

Your answer using estimation = about 138 degrees Fahrenheit using mathematical formula = 140 degrees Celsius

TAKE A BREAK

This is my favorite park to walk in. It is Snake Lake Nature Center on S. 19th and S. Stevens St. You can walk on flat surfaces or up and down hills. You can go for a short walk or a long one. Whatever you want. This is a long video where the hiker explores different trails.
