Vocabulary for the fossil reading below.

fossil - the remains of a plant or animal that lived millions of years ago that is now rock.

prehistoric - a time or time period before history was recorded or written down.

petrification - the process by which an animal or plant that dies turns into rock ( fossil ).

rot - the breaking down of something organic. Example: An apple rots if it sits a long time, and you don't eat it. It will become soft, change color, smell bad, attract flies, and eventually becomes like water.

scavenger - an animal that eats or feeds on dead animal or plant matter.

PETRIFIED WOOD

You can see growth rings in some tree fossils, such as this petrified tree trunk.


Petroglyphs are rock carvings....pictures chipped into the stone with an ancient tool of some kind. Outside the Interpretive Center is a display of Native American petroglyphs.
