Incorporating the theme of 'Curiosity', our Year 7 students investigated the topic - What it means to be Catholic. During this topic, as curious learners, Year 7 answered the big question - What does it mean to be Catholic? Through the eyes of curiosity, the students explored this question. With this idea, students were given the opportunity to undertake deep thinking and explore what they are curious about within this topic.
Throughout their learning students were responsible for the images that created our curiosity board, accompanied by various videos that were in response to the learning content of this topic, focusing on the letters spelled in the word, curiosity.
Alive in Christ
Every baptised person has an ongoing responsibility to follow Jesus’ way of life in their thoughts, words and actions. In this unit students investigate the counter-cultural nature of Jesus’ ministry and how his actions reflect the love of God. They reflect upon the call to be an authentic witness to a life of faith. The Alive in Christ unit reflects on the values, understanding and skills in relation to Catholic moral teaching, its relationship to moral character, moral issues and the call to work for justice in the world. It focuses on their personal responsibility for moral decision-making, belief in their own potential to effect change, and apply principles of justice and compassion in their lives. As a result Jesus’ way of living isn’t always easy.
In the unit “Alive in Christ” students explore the essential question Jesus’ way of living isn’t ways easy.
When thinking about how to spark curiosity about the question, it was decided that students would explore, through what they are most curious about and also what interests them most, how can they help make Christ come alive at MSJ.
Students worked in groups to come up with an idea that interested them, and a product that would be added to a website, showcasing all of the ways that Christ can come alive at MSJ.
Scroll down to see a sample of one of the products and then click the link to enter the site and explore the different ways that students approached the question.
The students investigated the topic in the following 'curious' ways:
C= Catholic Tradition Beliefs - Nicene Creed - creating a contemporary contemporary expression
U= Understanding and unity - How the Sisters of St Joseph, our school motto and our school history unite us as a community. Students to create own choice to demonstrate curious understanding of this - eg. song, shield, artwork, new cover for diary that we could put to Mrs archer - ideas could be incorporated for 2021
R= Reflect on personal experiences of Catholic communities - write curious questions, thought provoking to survey and presents analysis as charts etc with explanation
I= Identity - cultural expressions of the same faith - curiosity about east v’s west. “How does the effect of ‘cultural influences’ on religious practices celebrate both the unity and diversity of the universal Catholic Church?”
O= Curiosity about organisations that link to our school and how these can be further fostered
S= Symbols, rituals, practices and celebrations - how different religious practices and celebrations enhance the Catholic identity of MSJ. Curiosity about what is current practice and how it might be improved? Explore what we currently know and do - what else could spark your curiosity?
I= Influence of religious belief? - Creating a video clip that demonstrates Jesus' values as a role model for us into practice
T= Tying it all together - Respond to our overarching question - What does it mean to be Catholic? As a class at the end of the unit students create a graffiti wall of their responses to this question - This group will need to find these answers in the CURIOSIY presentations and string them towards relevant parts of the graffiti wall
Y= Yes to God’s call - how can we make a contribution - curiosity about what might invite them to take up this challenge
