Curious Sea Creatures
Year 8 looked at the representation of Sea Creatures in art. They worked on drawings in various media, then designed a "new" sea creature based on these drawings. In a group, they negotiated between their designs to build a final composite sea creature. Students were encouraged to consider how working at a large scale and in a group would change their practice as an artist.
Collaborative Mural Project with Artistically Gifted students for St Mary's Primary School Georges Hall
MSJ has built a close relationship with St Mary’s Primary at Georges Hall. Many of our girls come from this school and have fond memories of their time there. The Principal of St Marys, Mrs Monica Palmer and the Newman Facilitator, Ms Kylie Gava, approached us about a collaborative project for the artistically gifted from both schools. Together we drew on the talent of Stage 2 students from St Marys and Stage 4 students from MSJ to find the special features of St Marys’ and create a mural for the bare wall behind their Mary MacKillop garden.
A drawing workshop was held in Term 1 at the Primary school to initiate the gathering of ideas.
The final design came together using the drawings of students from both schools. Unable to bring the St Mary’s students to our school to paint, the MSJ girls had a painting day and slowly the mural came to life.
Finally finished, with the Year 8 girls giving up many lunchtimes, we hand it over to Mrs Palmer and Ms Gava where it will be displayed on the wall above the Mary MacKillop garden
