Gold Coins

Students earn gold coins throughout the day for a variety of reasons. They can be awarded for following directions, setting a good example, participating in class, answering a tough question, showing improvement, being a good friend....basically any time we catch the kids modeling good behavior. On Fridays, kids can cash in their coins for prizes on our Treats Trolley. This helps students learn the value of good behavior as well as teaches them lessons on saving money and basic addition and subtraction.

Wizard of the Week

Each week a student is selected to be our Wizard of the Week. This student can be chosen for a variety of reasons. Our goal is to acknowledge the strengths of each student as well as improvement or growth shown.

As Wizard of the Week, the student is awarded the following:

their achievement announced to the class
their photo on the class bulletin board
a certificate
a gold coin to use in the school book vending machine
the job of line leader and punch card holder
a free treat from the Treat Trolley
a feature in our weekly parent newsletter

Harker School PBSIS Program

Harker School uses the theme Comet Pride as part of Character Education and Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS). The program encourages students to demonstrate, promote, and celebrate Comet Pride.

The Positive Behavior Support in Schools framework is associated with increases in positive student outcomes and decreases in behavioral infractions as measured by office behavior incident referral and suspension data. In New Jersey, consistent high fidelity implementation of PBSIS has resulted in an average of a 21% decrease in referrals to the office for behavior infractions and a 30% average decrease in out of school suspensions.

Our PBSIS program allows faculty and staff members to participate by handing out Comet Cash to students who demonstrate positive behavior related to our six stars of stellar character. Students can earn Comet Cash for demonstrating positive character traits in the bus lanes, in the hallways, during lunch/recess, and in the classroom.
