Meet Ms. Speis
Third Grade Special Education Teacher
Education:
BA Teacher of the Handicapped K-12, Rowan University
Certified Elementary Teacher
Experience:
I have taught various grades and subjects from 2nd grade through 12th in several districts prior to joining Harker School as a third grade special education teacher.
This is my 4th year teaching third grade in the Swedesboro-Woolwich School District.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that a teacher should be more than just an educator. We should be role models by showing compassion, empathy, respect and trust while being fair and consistent. Children come from different types of backgrounds and all have different learning styles. To some, a teacher is as close to a family or role model that they will encounter. In knowing this, it is our responsibility to demonstrate positive appropriate behavior by teaching open communication, confidence and conflict resolution in addition to subject matter.
Children need to feel secure enough to fail because failure leads to accomplishment. There is no such thing as a wrong answer, it’s a perfect mistake. It is my goal to be a successful teacher, but more importantly to make an impact on children so they become successful, confident, enriched adults.
Facts About Me:
I live in Pitman with my two sons, Yianni and Spiro, and my dog, Kiki. Spiro attends Rowan University for his masters in child psychology. Yianni is a junior at Rowan College as he works toward a career in law enforcement, aspiring to become a State Trooper. I am fluent in Greek, live for coffee, and love to travel.
