Audio Technology Careers

Around 30,000 new jobs will be available in the audio technology industry over the next five years for workers such as system technicians, audio engineers and sound system designers.

ACOUSTIC ENGINEER CAREER DEFINITION

Acoustic Engineers, also known as Sound Engineers, are experts on various forms of audio equipment and on using the equipment to manage produced sound effectively for a particular environment. Much of their work is devoted to setting up microphones, mixing boards, amplifiers and other electronic equipment for recordings or live events. Many jobs are available in large cities and other areas where television and radio stations are based.

HOW TO BECOME AN ACOUSTIC ENGINEER

Required Education for a Career in Acoustic Engineering

A bachelor’s degree in Sound Engineering or a related major is generally the highest educational requirement for Acoustic Engineers. Many technical schools offer certificates and associate degrees. Courses in this field usually cover physics, engineering acoustics, electronics and the practical application of sound engineering and related technology.

Skills Required for a Career as an Acoustic Engineer

Employers seek Acoustic Engineers who are proficient with audio equipment, have acute hearing, and can troubleshoot when equipment doesn’t produce desired results. Dexterity to handle various tools is also necessary to be in Acoustic Engineering.

CAREER AND ECONOMIC OUTLOOK FOR ACOUSTIC ENGINEERING

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average annual salary for an Acoustic Engineer is $43,010 (http://www.bls.gov). The field should hold strong over the next few decades and job growth should be steady due to demand for engineers and technicians who can set up, repair and maintain sound equipment.

Audio Recording Classes

Prospective students searching for audio recording classes found the following information relevant and useful.

Information about Recording Arts

One who appreciates music or sound effects and likes working with audio communication technologies may enjoy a career in the recording arts industry. Recording arts professionals often operate sound equipment to record, manipulate, master or remix music, voices or other sounds. These recordings are then used for artistic or musical enjoyment or in motion pictures and television productions.

As the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), http://www.bls.gov, notes, this is a relatively small industry, so job competition may be fierce. Those who attend a college, university or professional school offering courses in broadcast technologies or sound recording, or who gain significant experience working as an assistant in a sound studio may improve their odds of success.
