Who defines the learning content in sexuality education?
Who defines the learning content in sexuality education?
The Minister of Education (EA, s. 461) is responsible for defining the compulsory content.
Who plans and delivers learning content for sexuality education?
The school principal and school staff are responsible for planning the learning content for sexuality education. The governing board is responsible for approving the school’s plans (EA, ss. 85 and 89).
Student learning is assured by teachers and other members of the school team, in collaboration with professionals from the health and social services system (HSSS) and community organizations.
The school staff includes teachers, education professionals (psychoeducator, spiritual care and guidance and community involvement animator, social worker, person with a degree in sexology), etc.
Who reports on sexuality education?
The school administration, teachers, and complementary educational services personnel report on sexuality education. The following people or groups may contribute to this process:
-Governing board
-Collaborators from the integrated health and social services centre (CISSS) who work in close collaboration with those who planned, designed or offered sexuality education activities
-Students (secondary school)
-Parents

A school’s sexuality plan must be presented and approved by the governing board every year. It is imperative that the plan be approved before the content is taught by teachers.

The education institution will process, on a case-by-case basis, all exemption requests. Parents must be provided with detailed information regarding the content being taught and given adequate time to complete the exemption process. If an exemption is obtained, it is only valid for one topic, one child, and one school year.
