Every student who visited the library signed into a Google form using an iPad on the counter. They added their name and email address (so they could be added to Go Guardian), which teacher sent them and why they were coming to the library. The biggest reason students signed into the library was for Book Club! See above for all Book Club Activities!
The total number of ebooks and audio books checked out was 1669! As you can see borrowing ebooks is more popular than borrowing audio books. These numbers are up from last year in which 43 audio books and 396 ebooks for a total of 439. (These numbers include the middle school.)
Book Books
962 Books were checked out this school year at the high school, which is up from 328 last year (during Covid).
Pizza Bingo... 14 students completed Bingo Cards for Pizza in the first semester and 17 students completed a an Ice Cream Bingo second semester.
12 Day of Christmas Book Giveaway
Valentine's Day Blind Date with a Book Reading Promotion was a hit with over 40 books read.
Read a Rosie program brought in over 60 Rosie evaluations for the State Rosewater Contest.
Through a generous donation we were able to give away 12 New Books leading up to Christmas Vacation. Each of the 12 Days for break a name was drawn to come pick out a book. All you had to do to get your name in the drawing is to have checked out a book! One entry per book checked out.
Poetry Club met every Wednesday to share poetry written by the members as well as sharing favorite found poetry. Club members painted a Fred the Goat: Edgar Allen Goat for the local Fred Festival. They also decorated the bulletin board in the hall for Poetry Month.
Middle School News is comprised of three trimesters of 7th Graders. Each group works for twelve weeks learning the basics of videography, digital storytelling & scriptwriting with an emphasis on media literacy. Students produced a daily newscast. They featured students achieving goals, sports results and highlights, upcoming events, weather, cafeteria menus, birthdays and special interest stories.
Advanced Middle School News consisted of 8th graders engaging in news media for the entire academic year. Students focused on World News, National News, Local News as well as School News. They researched various topics of personal interest and were assigned news breaking topics/stories to cover. The Advanced class also participated in PBS Student Reporting Labs. PBS asked for specific stories for our students to report on and submit to PBS.
Through out the year PBL/Project Based Learning and Genius Hour student were able to focus on problems, projects, and areas of interest during their PBL classes. Many students helped out in elementary classrooms, learned new languages, worked on knitting, enhanced chess skills, and promoted school sports and clubs. During the process students also studied better ways to learn and improve their growth mindset.
Martha Bladen, President of the Switzerland County Historical Society came to introduce our students to opportunities they can volunteer with the our parent organization to further help preserve and teach Switzerland County history. Several students served at All Hallow's Eve at the Thiebaud Farmstead around Halloween and a couple students volunteered at A Country Christmas.
Switzerland County hosted Tirso Martinez De La Colina Gracia from Spain. Tirso played soccer and baseball and swam on the swim team. He was hosted by the Curlin Family and loved his time with the Curlins in Switzerland County.
The Switzerland County High School Book Club had a busy year. Not only did they sponsor two incentive Book Bingo Parties, they read several books, went on a field trip, did a fundraiser and a book drive. The picture above was our Christmas Party where everyone wrapped their favorite book and gifted it to another member. The book club sold Sweetheart Cabochon for Valentine's Day to pay for a field trip to the Indianapolis PL Book Sale where every received a bag to fill with free books. The club also did their first book club read of Rosewater Nominee, The Good Girl's Guide to Murder with over 10 participants! From our fundraiser proceeds everyone who read book one got the second book in the series to read over the summer.
The high school collection holds 8,204 books which works out to 16.5 books per student. 2,398 are considered diverse (30%) and 1,754 books are considered SEL (22%). While a very high percentage of our books are considered "aged", these numbers only represent our hard copies and not our ebook and audio book collection. Balancing these resouces in the future will be integral to the future of the library.
A student-initiated and led March Madness Chess Tournament included 28 students and several staff members. Nathan Furnish beat John McAlister in the final round,
Fourteen book club members got to participate in a trip to Newfields to see the LUME VanGogh Experience and then to the Marion County Public Library Book Sale. Students were each given a bag to fill with books for them to keep. Proceeds for the bags and the VanGogh Experience came from the Valentine's Cabochon Fundraiser.
