Joey Salinas is currently the Assistant Director of Bands at Resnik Middle School in Southwest ISD. Mr. Salinas was raised primarily in Corpus Christi, but has resided in various areas of Texas. He Graduated from Richard King High School in 2017, where he was a euphonium player for the Mighty Mustang Band. Mr. Salinas holds an Associate’s Degree in Music from Del Mar College along with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from The University of Texas at Austin.
Mr. Salinas’ Education involved being mentored by outstanding musicians/music educators, such as Dr. Abel Ramirez, Professor Charles Villarubia, and Dr. Donald Pinson. With their guidance, Mr. Salinas was able to become a member of the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, a 2-time TCCBDA All-State musician, and a 3-time winner of the Del Mar College Solo Competition. Through these accomplishments, he has been able to play alongside fantastic musicians from around the world.
While Mr. Salinas was in school, he spent 6 years participating in Drum Corps International as a performing member. He was a member with The Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, where he served as a baritone player between the years of 2016 and 2017. Following this, he participated with the 7-time champions, The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, between the years of 2018-2021. He initially began his time with The Cavaliers as a baritone player, but began to serve as the Drum Major of The Cavaliers between the years of 2019-2021. Mr. Salinas had the honor and privilege of receiving the “Cavalier of the Year” award for the 2021 season.
During his time as a student at Del Mar College and the University of Texas at Austin, he had the privilege of working with several marching programs in both South Texas and Central Texas. The experiences he had working with these programs involved teaching all brass sections, marching visual pedagogy, and writing choreography for these programs. He has had the honor of being involved with programs such as Leander High School, Westwood High School, Dripping Springs High School, and many more.
Mr. Salinas began his career as a band director in 2023 with McNair Middle School, and was fortunate to receive the UIL Sweepstakes Award in Concert and Sightreading as a first-year teacher. He is ecstatic to be able to bring his experience to this program while being alongside the veteran band director that is Mr. Gilbert Sanchez.
Mr. Salinas is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters association, and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
