An assistive technology (AT) device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. An AT device is something used to bypass, work around, or compensate for a disability.
AT is not instructional or educational technology. AT is not synonymous with computers or iPads but can include them.
AT is not always the answer. Accommodations might help the student better than AT. Understanding AT Laws can be complex in the variations of how AT is used however, there are plenty of resources available to assist you & your family in understanding your options.
An AT service means any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device. This can include the following:
Assessment or consultation
Acquisition of AT devices
Selecting, maintaining, and repairing devices
Training of student, family, and school staff
