Faculty (including me), counselors, student tutors, and many others are ready to help you reach your educational goals. This can include choosing classes, financial aid, study skills, locating and using sources for an essay—you name it, we have someone who can help. To locate the service you need, see the services listed below. Don’t see what you’re looking for? No problem! Just visit Southwestern College's Student Services page.
As your course instructor, I am your first contact for any help you might need in this course. If something doesn't make sense, sounds confusing, or if you'd just like more information, let me know! You can reach me through the Canvas Inbox or my email. If you're having difficulty using Canvas, I can help you with that too. However, if Canvas stops working for some reason, or if you're experiencing technical issues, please see Technical Support below.
Learning Assistance Services (LAS) offers both in-person and online tutoring staffed by trained peer tutors ready to help students succeed. For more information, please go to SWC's Academic Tutoring site, or look for “Student Support” at the bottom of your blue left-hand Canvas navigation bar.
SWC's Online Writing Lab (OWL) is also available for written feedback on essay submissions!
Tutoring for writing and other subjects is also available via eTutoring. You can meet with a tutor live via Zoom, or submit your essays for written feedback in the Writing Lab.
SWC’s Power Study Program provides a form of academic support in which a trained tutor (“Leader”) is integrated into our course. Our assigned Power Study Leader will work with us in class and facilitate out-of-class group sessions that are designed to support you with the content and assignments specific to our course. Research shows that regular participation in Power Study sessions contributes to higher letter grades and GPAs, so please be sure to take advantage of this FREE resource!
SWC students can visit the Online Learning Center site, where they can access orientations, Canvas tours, and other forms of assistance for online learning.
For trouble with Canvas, you can dial the student support line (available 24/7) at (844) 629-6835, or email onlinelearning@swccd.edu.
You may also find what you need in the Canvas Student Guide.
The Pronto messaging app and Canvas add-on enable students to communicate directly with their instructors (think texting vs. emailing). I have added Pronto to our course as a convenient means of getting in touch with me for any of your school-related needs. This is in no way required for our class; simply use it if you find it helpful! (I definitely do!)
Counselors are ready to assist you with all your academic, career, and personal counseling needs. See our Counseling page for more information about the different services available to you.

If you have a learning disability, physical disability, or any other circumstance that needs special accommodation, please discuss it with your instructor in person or via email. I want you to be successful and I am happy to work with you! Here is additional information provided by our college’s DSS office:
Southwestern College recommends that students with disabilities or specific learning needs contact their professors during the first two weeks of class to discuss academic accommodations. If a student believes that they may have a disability and would like more information, they are encouraged to contact Disability Support Services (DSS) at (619) 482-6512 (voice), (619) 207-4480 (video phone), or email at DSS@swccd.edu. Alternate forms of this syllabus and other course materials are available upon request.
Any student who faces challenges securing food, housing, or health insurance and believes that this may affect their course performance is urged to contact Student Services or Health Services. If you are comfortable doing so, please notify your instructor to enable them to provide you additional support.
Don’t forget: I’m here to help, too. I’m not an expert on everything, but I can help you find the expert you need!
