In this class, we will become a community of writers and critical thinkers. You all have stories to share and perspectives to express, and I am here to help you gain confidence in using various tools for understanding, communicating, and arguing about the issues that matter to you!
English 115+ is a 6-unit course that takes a “supported” approach to college composition. The extra time devoted to reading, writing, and thinking is designed to help students succeed in transfer-level English composition by providing additional support and focusing on strategies for comprehending, analyzing, and then responding to texts in organized, well-developed, thesis-driven essays. The course includes instruction in the fundamentals of critical thinking, research, and source evaluation.
No prerequisites! ENGL 115+ is an open-access course.
However, make sure that you're enrolled in both ENGL 115-P05 and ENGL 45-P05 with me!
Some of you may think of writing as something daunting, stressful, or perhaps boring. I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be that way! Practicing reading and writing is an important means of empowering yourself to understand your surroundings, and to communicate your perspective with authenticity and confidence—the way you want to tell it!
There is no textbook for you to purchase! All course readings and viewings will be made available to you via Canvas.
Some of the texts and viewings we will be working with throughout the semester include:
"How to Make Hard Choices" by Ruth Chang
Selections from The Bullet Journal Method by Ryder Carroll
Selections from Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke, MD
And many more!
SWC email account (check this regularly!)
Consistent access to a computer with internet, preferably with webcam and microphone (though not required). This will help you with any Zoom conferences you might like to schedule, but the most important thing is to have a device on which you can comfortably type essays (if your phone or tablet work for you, great!).
Software for composing and saving documents, such as MS Word or Google Docs
A system for saving and accessing your work (flash drive, external hard drive, Google Drive, email)
Notebook and writing utensils for taking notes, brainstorming, and completing group work in class.
Wearing face masks in our classroom will not be required, per SWC district policy. However, students are absolutely welcome to wear face masks as desired, and I will have face masks and hand sanitizer available in the classroom for everyone's use.
