This is a fully online, 16-week course that begins on August 21 and ends on December 10. It requires a time commitment of approximately twelve hours a week.
Our course is asynchronous, which means we have no required class meetings. Instead, you will have assignments due each week, and you can complete them when it is most convenient for you.
Our course is organized into weekly modules, which will always open no later than Monday morning.
Reliable, high-speed internet access: The Southwestern College Chula Vista and San Ysidro campuses provide free wifi.
Microsoft Word: SWC students can get Office 365 for free. Visit Office 365 for Students for details and a request form.
Computer: Much of our course is mobile friendly, but a computer makes working online easier! If you would like to borrow a computer, visit SWC Cares and select SWC Connects.
Everyone has questions from time to time, and chances are, if you have a question, someone else has it, too! We are all in this together, so please reach out when you need help!
If you have a personal question or concern about the class, please visit me during my office hours or contact me via the Canvas Inbox (my preferred method) or email: syonker@swccd.edu. I do my best to respond to messages within one business day. If I don’t respond within that time frame, please resend your message.
Use the Q&A Discussion forum in Canvas to ask questions your classmates might share or be able to answer. I will drop into this forum and answer questions, too.
When you have technical questions about Canvas and online learning at SWC, the Online Learning Center (OLC) is ready to help! You can also contact Canvas Support via Live Chat.
I want our class to be a supportive learning environment where we value, honor, and learn from each other’s diverse identities, perspectives, and experiences.
The Course Content and Netiquette sections of this syllabus provide specific guidelines for creating this environment.
During the first week of class, we will collaborate to develop additional expectations for ourselves and for each other.
