According to a recent report by the University of California, “Faculty strive to be fair and eliminate bias from assessment, but standard grading practices may perpetuate bias.” English professor Asao Inoue argues the same in his 2015 book Antiracist Writing Assessment Ecologies and proposes an alternative to standard grading called contract grading. Thus, I have chosen to adopt contract grading.
Adapted from Asao Inoue
I won’t be assigning letter grades on assignments in this class. Instead, your grade will be based on the sustained effort and commitment you put into our course and your own learning.
Not only do traditional grading practices perpetuate bias but these practices can also lead students to think more about their grade than about learning and be reluctant to take risks with their ideas and writing. The fact is, though, that we often learn and grow the most when we take risks. For these reasons, I am using contract grading.
The default grade for this course is a B.
For every assignment, you will get either a complete or an incomplete. In Canvas, a complete is indicated by a check mark, and an incomplete is indicated by an X. If your assignment is incomplete, I will give you feedback on what to do to make it complete. As long as you follow SWC’s academic integrity guidelines, you will always get a second chance!
For an A, you must complete the requirements for a B and an additional project.
