2024 preparatory work
Preparing for Borlase
It is important that all students are confident that they can make an effective, purposeful start to their A level courses in September 2024. All departments have been asked to outline preparatory work that students should complete over the summer.
Preparatory work
Full guidance and detail will be given during the induction sessions on Thursday 30 June.
SWBGS teach the Edexcel GCSE course and the Edexcel A Level builds on this, meaning a solid GCSE grounding is essential. You need to honestly RAG-rate the tables of Learning Outcomes on pages 10 to 40 of the Edexcel GCSE specification and use your GCSE notes, BBC Bitesize, Physics and Maths Tutor, Seneca, Cognito etc. to consolidate your weakest areas.
Calculations tend to be everyone’s weakest area when it comes to A Level and so the Calculation questions also need to be completed - these will be referred to in the induction session, but can be accessed here. These need to be handed in during the first lesson in September to be marked.
You will sit a GCSE Baseline test in the second week of term and to prepare for this you should complete, under-timed conditions and self-mark the 2018 Edexcel GCSE Chemistry papers (see below) and ensure you ask for help with any issues during the first week of term.
Resources to obtain
Most pupils buy the hard copy textbooks but you can also get on-line access to the two course textbooks for a lot less money.
Students will be also expected to buy a lab coat and goggles ahead of September.
