Preparing for Borlase
It is important that all students are confident that they can make an effective, purposeful start to their A level courses in September 2024. All departments have been asked to outline preparatory work that students should complete over the summer.

Download a copy of the Edexcel A Level Geography (9GEO) specification from the internet.
Produce 4 flow diagrams summarizing the content of the four units studied in year 12: Topic 1 - Tectonic Hazards; Topic 2B - Coastal Landscapes & Change; Topic 3 - Globalisation; Topic 4A Regenerating Places.
Choose 1 or more of the following four investigations and produce a short powerpoint or essay on each:
Investigate a selection of the following scientists to discover their contribution to the evidence pointing towards plate tectonic theory: Arthur Holmes, Kiyoo Wadati, Harry Hess, Fred Vine, Dan McKenzie, Wouter Sigloch & Mitchell Mihalynuk.
Investigate the HS2 project to discover its aims and why it is so controversial.
Investigate Chesil Beach and the theories behind its formation along with the contemporary threats to it.
Investigate why globalisation may widen the development gap within countries while narrowing it between countries.
Resources to obtain
Purchase a copy of the textbook: ‘Geography for Edexcel: A Level Year 1 & AS’, Bob Digby et al, Oxford University Press. ISBN9-780198-366454
Purchase one of the following books: ‘Sustainable Development’ by Jeffrey Sachs; ‘The Dance of Air & Sea’, Arnold Taylor; ‘Hutton’s Arse: 3 Billion Years of Geology in NW Scotland’, Malcolm Rider; ‘Prisoners of Geography’, Tim Marshall; ‘Why The West Rules for Now’, Ian Morris; or an equivalent. Read at least some of it and write a short book review.
