Unit 3 - Multiplication, Division, Area and Perimeter

Vocabulary:

*Product - The answer to a multiplication problem.

Ex) 9 X 7 = 63 (63 is the product)

*Factors - the numbers multiplied together in a multiplication problem.

Ex) 9 X 7 = 63 (9 and 7 are the factors)

*Dividend - The total, or number you will be dividing.

Ex) 100 / 4 = 25 (100 is the dividend)

*Divisor - The number you are dividing by.

Ex) 100 / 4 = 25 (4 is the divisor)

*Quotient - The answer to a division problem.

Ex) 100/4 = 25 (25 is the quotient)

*Remainder - Anything left over in a division problem that cannot be evenly separated.

Ex) 102 / 4 = 25 R2 (2 is the remainder)

*Area - The measure of the inside of a figure.

*Perimeter - The distance around a figure.

Area Model Multiplication

Use the expanded form of the numbers and boxes to multiply each value one at a time.

Area Model of Division

You can use the area model to find quotients. Here are images that show this.

Area and Perimeter

To find area you multiply length X width.

To find perimeter you add the sides of the rectangle.

Some people add the length and the width and then multiply that by 2.
