Art Activity for the week of 6/1-6/5

Found Object Texture Rubbings

Hi kindergartners!

This is a very fun project creating textural rubbings using objects you find around your house.

Some suggestions for the rubbings are listed below:

  • Your rubbings could be made into a collage that share a common theme. For example, if you like to play baseball, you could focus your rubbings on equipment you would need to play the sport. You may decide to use the lacing on your glove, the texture on your bat and the stitches on your baseball. They could all be in one paper rubbing. You can also add the name of the sport for a finishing touch!
  • Add a drawing to your rubbing (like the piggy bank to the right.) This is called a "collage" because it has many different layers to it.
  • Finally, you could just create a mix of rubbings to create abstract art. Remember the Mondrian art project we did was abstract....just designs!
  • Have fun with this and please send me your artwork! diane.scherny@swanseaschools.org
  • Miss you, still...

Supplies and Materials

  • relief found objects
  • thin paper of any size or type
  • mark-making tools (crayons, colored pencils, etc.)
  • pencil
  • eraser
  • scissors
  • glue stick if making a collage

Art Activity for the week of 5/25-5/29

A Windy Day

Draw a windy day by showing yourself flying away on an umbrella! Make sure to add some flying hair too!

With all these windy days we have been having, I thought it would be fun to draw a picture like we were being blown upward into the sky!

What you’ll need:

      • 8.5x11" white paper
      • black marker
      • crayons or markers or watercolors
      • pencil
      • Art Assignment:
  1. First, gently fold the paper in half top to bottom and left to right. This will be your guide for drawing the picture. If you would rather not crease the paper, draw a dot in the middle of your paper with a light pencil line top to bottom and left to right. You will make a big plus sign.
  2. Create a curve in top left section of paper. Draw dots and connect.
  3. Draw the bottom of the umbrella.
  4. Draw the umbrella handle.
  5. Add a head and circle hand.
  6. Draw windy hair like it is being blown and your kind face.
  7. Draw your favorite t-shirt or a jacket on yourself.
  8. Add pants, legs and a scarf if you want.
  9. You can be holding something you like in your other hand also like a favorite stuffed animal, your pet or your brother or sister!
  10. Draw tree tops (or make them clouds!)
  11. Trace with a marker and color.

The Feeling Crayon Activity!

The Feeling Crayon

What color am I feeling?

In addition to learning about an object out of its' ordinary size, this art project shows the unique ways color represents emotion.

In addition to learning about an object out of its' ordinary size, this art project shows the unique ways color represents emotion.

Art Assignment:

  • First, pick an emotion you would like to express in your art. Think of a color you feel would show that emotion. If you chose a "sad" feeling, it does not have to be blue. The color you decide on is up to you! You can also decide on a blend of colors or work all the colors as in the crayon art above.
  • Look at a crayon closely. Using shapes of circles, rectangles and triangles, cut out the pieces. For the triangle shape at the top, cut the tip off to make it look like a crayon top. It is a flower pot shape upside down!
  • Let your child draw eyes, nose, mouth and eyebrows to show emotion.
  • Starting with the body of the crayon, gluing each layer working your way to the front of the art.
  • Allow enough room for the face between the two sets of stripes
  • Add arms and legs if you'd like
  • You can even name your crayon such as "pickle green!"
  • Please send creations to: kabrain@swanseaschools.org
  • I look forward to seeing what you do with your imaginations!

What you need:

  • 2 pieces of 8.5 x 11 colored paper (or hand-color white paper) Cardboard from cereal box may also be cut using height of cereal box for crayon body!
  • small piece of white paper for eyes
  • small black paper strips for stripes on crayon and arms and legs
  • circle from object around home to trace for circle cutouts about size of Ritz cracker (small lid may be used)
  • crayons/paint
  • dark colored marker for outlining
  • scissors
  • glue stick

Students in Kindergarten have been learning a lot about line, shape, pattern and texture over the last couple of months. Some activities to support that may include going on a texture hunt. All you need is paper and a peeled crayon! Look for things around the house or outside that have Texture=The way an object feels to the touch or looks as it may feel if it were touched. Collect as many different types of texture as you can then cut them up and make a paper collage out of them! Maybe turn them into an animal in the style of children's book author and illustrator, Eric Carl! Be creative and have fun exploring all the different types of texture around you!

Week of March 30th-April 4th...Try one of these cute spring/easter ideas using toilet paper rolls and supplies from around your house!
