Bubble Painting
Some outdoor fun for you on a warm day...
Art Enrichment Learning:
- Add three tablespoons of bubble solution and two tablespoons of paint to a cup.
- Mix the paint and bubble solution together.
- Place a piece of paper on the grass or a table.
- Dip the bubble wand or a straw into the bubble paint and then blow out bubbles so they land on the paper.
- See what you can make of the neat shapes you just made by how they landed on the page!

Under the Dirt
Under the Dirt
Here’s how to draw vegetables and their root system while they grow in a garden. You can even include a worm or two and a butterfly!
While I have been planting in my garden, I've been thinking about what we plant and how they look not just above the dirt, but below. So much important work is going on underneath where we can't see! I thought we could draw what really is going on in the soil as our plants are growing.
Vegetables that grow in the ground are called root vegetables. This means their roots really are the parts of the vegetable that we eat!
What you’ll need:
- 8.5x11" white paper held horizontally (left to right)
- black / brown marker or crayon
- colored markers or crayons
- pencil
Art Assignment: (step-by-step below)
- Begin this assignment by drawing the ground line.
- Draw a turnip as shown in the middle.
- Add a beet shape to the left.
- Add a carrot shape to the right.
- Add a smaller carrot centered on the left.
- Add a radish shape centered on the right.
- Erase the ground lines inside each vegetable.
- You can put an expression on your vegetable... (silly, scared, sleepy, surprised)
- Add worms below, and butterfly and sky above.
- Trace with a marker and color.
- You can even add a small amount of glue on soil area of your coloring adding real dirt on brown area of your picture!

Garden Pin Wheel Art Project
Art Assignment:
- Begin this easy pinwheel craft by gathering several pieces of your art. Cut each piece into a 4″x 4″ or 5″x 5″ square. Next fold the square in half at the corners, making a triangle. Unfold and repeat the this step from the other corner. This should give you an “X” shape on your paper when you unfold it.
- With a family member present, using scissors, make four diagonal cuts on the folded lines of the “X” toward the paper’s center. Stop at least 1/2" from the center.
- Next fold the corner to the left of each cut into the center. Hold the folded points in place while you push the pipe cleaner through the center or use a hole punch to create a hole and then slide the pipe cleaner through it. Make sure that you put holes in all four folded corners. You will need all four in order for your pinwheel to be formed. Twist the artwork back and forth around the pipe cleaner a few times until the paper slides easy back and forth. This ensures your pinwheel will be able to turn in the wind.
- If the artwork you are recycling is just one sided flip it over, art side down, before beginning this step. (You may also create artwork on both sides of your paper.) Doing this allows the colored portions of the artwork to be seen.
- Wrap the ends of the pipe cleaner around the straw or stick. Make sure they are tight to avoid your pinwheel sliding down to the bottom.
- That’s the last step! Give it a try, blow on the pinwheel and watch it spin! Now your pinwheel craft is ready to find it’s new home in your garden.
- What you’ll need:
- 5x5" old artwork, new art to create or colorful paper
- scissors
- pipe cleaner
- straw or small branch
- hole punch (optional)
Check out this pinwheel garden in New York City that is celebrating Prospect Park's 150th anniversary. Each pinwheel was made by people from the community. The pinwheel material is weatherproof. It is made from crushed stones. Even in the rain, it will hold up fine and not get soft like regular paper would. Each pinwheel has a message inside of why the park is important to them! Maybe you could have your own personal message inside your pinwheel art!

I wanted to let you know that it has been brought to my attention that Swansea is participating in an "Easter Egg Hunt" for Easter where you can decorate and color an Easter Egg and hang it in a window in your house. Then, at the end of the week you can take a drive around town and see how many other Easter Eggs you can find hanging in windows. I thought this would be a great art activity for you to do this week if you'd like, and what a fun way to have an Easter Egg hunt!!!

Students in Grade 1 were currently working on learning about and creating art in the style of impressionist artist Claude Monet. They have also been working on using a variety of materials, media and techniques to produce different visual effects. Some activities to support that my include trying to create a work of art using things around the house or outside to experiment creating art with. For example, try painting with a q-tip using dabs of color like an impressionist artist. Paint or draw on different types of paper using different types of materials. For example, try painting with a feather, scrape into the wet paint with a fork, try sponge painting, or coloring on sand paper or create a work of art in your driveway using sidewalk chalk!
