Writing

Writing is a difficult activity for any first grader! In our classroom, we do our best to get our ideas to paper in a few different ways. We write in our weekly journal, complete writing activities and work on focused writing projects. This is a labor of love and takes a great deal of time and practice.

In first grade, our students are responsible for knowing how to write the following types of writing:

  • opinion
  • narrative
  • informational/explanatory

Here are some ways you can help your student at home with their writing:

  • Think of a topic and stick to that topic when writing
  • Have them tell their story to you on each page, then draw their pictures on the page before writing
  • Please encourage your child to s-t-r-e-t-c-h out their sounds
  • It is important that your child write the sounds he/she hears. The word does not necessarily need to be spelled correctly. This is called "Inventive Spelling".

Ideas for writing:

  • Your student can write about something that has a personal meaning to them - small moments writing.
  • Your student can write about a real topic like dogs, space or the ocean.
  • Your student can help you by writing the grocery list or a to-do list.
