Important People

Station masters like Levi Coffin, Thomas Garrett, and Frederick Douglass were a very important part of the Underground Railroad. Without all these station masters on the Underground Railroad, many slaves would not have escaped. Almost every master on the Underground Railroad had about one hundred people come through and stay at their homes. Station masters, like Levi, Thomas, and Frederick were great people doing good deeds for others.

Levi Coffin

Levi Coffin and his family were very helpful people. First off, Coffin assisted many runaways. He helped so many people and was a friendly man. Everyone involved considered him to be the "president" of the Underground Railroad. Second, He was a Quaker. It is important in their religion to see others as equal and to help enslaved people. That is why he and many others created the Society of Friends. To end, he helped many people. About two thousand escapees came through their house that the Coffins helped them. As you can see, Levi Coffin and his family were good people.

Thomas Garrett

Thomas Garrett was a very important and helpful station master. Over the course of time, he helped a lot of people. People estimate he assisted about two thousand five hundred people! Unfortunately, he was put in jail and was fined $5000 for helping innocent people. Before he was fined , he joined the Quaker Society of Friends. These people helped runaways when Garrett couldn't . As you can see, Thomas Garrett is a well remembered man.


Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was an amazing and brave station master. He was understanding of the slaves, because he had been in their shoes once. Douglass had also escaped on the Underground Railroad. He wanted to help others because he knew firsthand why slavery was wrong , and that life was hard for slaves. Also, Douglass had a safe house. This was dangerous. He could have been caught if he had not careful. He could have easily been fined and put in jail. Douglass was a heroic and important station master.


Levi Coffin, Thomas Garrett, and Frederick Douglass, were important people on the Underground Railroad. They let people into their homes, protected them, and fed them. Without these people called the station masters, many slaves wouldn't have escaped.
