Runaway Slave Ads

When slaves began to escape, slave owners became furious.

They sent out ads with high rewards for those who found the missing slaves.

What Are Slave Ads?

When slaves ran away, slave ads were put out by former slave owners. Usually they provided a brief description of what runaways looked like, and what they were last seen wearing, (since slave had only one set of clothing.) In a way, the slave owners gave a small biography for researchers to study, in order to find the fugitives. Some of what we know about the slave conditions were collected from the ads. Rewards could range from about $10-$2000, which is approximately $200 to $40,000 nowadays.
