Google Classroom

What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is a cloud based forum style school focused service that allows a student (or students) to interact with the teachers or particular classes.

As a Student you can view assignments set by your teacher. You are then able to complete and submit work for the teacher to mark, the teacher can also leave feedback for you to read.

How to access Google Classroom

Here we will explain how to access Google Classroom on your Smartphone or a school/home computer or laptop.

Accessing Google Classroom on a school/home computer or laptop

(If you do not know your login details please ask your Teacher or your Year's PSM they will get in contact with IT to get these for you)
Please note we are not able to email Student login details to Parents if the student is in School.

There are two different ways of signing into Google and accessing Classroom. You can either use Google's Homepage or you can Sign-in through our Student Homepage. As these are both Google login methods they use similar steps when logging in.

It is recommended that you sign into your Google Chrome browser or go to the Google homepage. If using Google's Homepage, locate the blue "Sign In" button in the top right of the page. Here you will need to enter your school @Swale.at email address and password. Otherwise if there is already a personal account shown on this menu click "Add account". You will then be able to enter the required details as mentioned above.

Once signed into Google locate and click the 9 squares in the top right of the page where the "Sign In" button used to be. Then select "Classroom"

If using the Student Homepage and are not signed into a @Swale.at Google account you will automatically be met with a login box. Here you will just need to enter your @Swale.at email and password which will then log you straight into the Student Homepage. Here locate the Classroom icon, click it and you will be taken to Google Classroom.

How to view tasks set by a teacher

To view homework or tasks set,

  1. Once logged in to Google Classroom

  2. Click on the class that you wish to view

Having clicked on the appropriate classroom, you will be in a Google Classroom. Here, you will have 3 tabs in front of you; "Stream", "Classwork" and "People".

The Stream page

The stream works similarly to a social network page. The most recent post that a teacher has added to the Google Classroom will be at the top and the oldest will be at the bottom. Each post will be associated with the subject that you are learning with that teacher. When a teacher posts an assignment on their Google Classroom, it will contain the name of the task, a description of what you have to do and possibly associated resources where possible. It will also have a due date for when the work needs to be completed.

Once you have clicked into an assignment you will then need to complete and submit your work, this can be found below.

The Classwork page

The classwork page is where you will find a very clear and easy list of all your current set assignments with their due date very visible to see.

The People page

The people page is where you will find who your teacher is of this class and your classmates, from here you can email your teacher (or teachers) if you have any questions.

Completing a set assignment

To start completing work within a set assignment you will need to click on the name of the assignment

Followed by “+Add or Create". A drop-down menu will appear.

Google Drive

If you have already created your work then by selecting this you can attach the work directly from your Google Drive.

File

If you have chosen to upload a file from your device you will need to re-upload the file if any changes are made to the file from your device, as these changes will not be saved to the already uploaded document.

Create new

If you have chosen to create a new document from the "Create" section, then simply click on the file and then you can start working. The file will open in a separate tab and will save automatically until closed. You are able to go back to this document to work on it as many times as you wish before submitting it, from your original assignment or Google Drive.

After choosing your document it will appear in a white box above the “+Add or Create” button. The “Mark as Done” button will change to “Hand in”.

Submitting a completed assignment

After you have completed your work or are happy with the document(s) you have uploaded, simply press the “Hand In” button.
