EARLY YEARS
Written by Ms. Jill
This week, our toddlers discovered the diamond shape. The learning began with the song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," which set the stage for an exciting observation: a rainbow diamond projected onto the ceiling. The children were delighted as they watched the shape move across the room, following its path and pointing it out as it moved around the classroom.
The children engaged in a sensory tracing activity on the light table. Using their fingers to move through layers of salt and rice, they practised the slanted lines and created marks using their pointer fingers. They worked together on a collaborative artwork by placing colourful confetti onto a large template; they created a magnificent rainbow diamond collage. This activity not only strengthened their shape recognition but also developed their fine motor skills and cooperative play. They also took part in a fun, practical task by searching for diamond shapes drawn on the window glass. Using sponges and water, they carefully wiped the shapes away, which was a fantastic way to develop their gross motor skills and arm strength.

K1 students joyfully explored the lesson on seasons and weather through a lively summer-themed experience. By coming to school in their summer outfits, they made meaningful connections to how we dress for different weathers. The highlight of the lesson focused on understanding what makes summer special—warm sunshine, outdoor activities, and time with friends. During their summer picnic, children experienced eating outdoors, just like people often do in sunny weather. Fun activities like bubble play and parachute games helped them feel the light, breezy nature of the season, while storytelling inside a tent added a cozy touch. Through creative art and craft work, they expressed their ideas about summer and seasonal changes. This hands-on approach made the concept of seasons and weather come alive, helping students understand how different times of the year affect how we play, dress, and live.

“Clean water comes from the ground.” 💧
“I know, fire can keep us warm.” 🔥
“Air can only be felt; it cannot be seen or touched.” 🌬️
These ideas became an interesting starting point for learning in the K2 classroom.
In this lesson, the children were encouraged to deepen their understanding of water, fire, and air as important elements in daily life. They learned about the functions of each element, as well as the possible dangers if they are not used carefully. Through discussion, the children began to realise how much humans depend on these three elements, while also exploring their similarities and differences.
The learning became even more exciting when the children explored how air moves through fun activities. They tried flying objects using a fan and attached ribbons to sticks to observe the direction of the wind. 🌱✨

In Grade 2 Art, students explored the beauty of the ocean through a creative silhouette painting project. They began by learning about warm and cool colours, understanding how cool colours can be used to represent water and create a calm ocean atmosphere.
Using watercolour painting techniques, students carefully painted their backgrounds with shades of blue, experimenting with blending to show depth and movement in the ocean. Once the background was complete, they drew sea creatures and ocean plants, then painted them in black to create strong silhouettes.
This technique helped students understand contrast and how silhouettes can create the effect of looking at sea life from within the ocean. The project also supported their skills in colour use, composition, and creativity, resulting in expressive and imaginative underwater scenes.

Empathy is a skill that needs to be nurtured. In Term 4, our Grade 3 students focus more on understanding empathy, including how to show empathy through kind actions and words. Apart from ES PSD Fair, which emphasises the importance of empathy, the skill of empathy is especially needed during this time as they begin to maintain deeper friendships and navigate the differences among them.
In understanding empathy, Grade 3 students learnt through performing skits about “Kindness Chain”. They learned that one simple act of kindness can lead to another. They also learned that by showing empathy, they can feel the positive feelings inside themselves and others. Some vocabulary words were also emphasised during the lessons, such as “kindness”, “share”, “help”, “encourage”, “include others”, “be friendly”, “say thank you”, “kindness grows” and “kindness chain”. Let’s keep on nurturing our children through kindness and empathy.
