A Recap of Our World Book Day Extravaganza
Written by Library Team
Last week, our school transformed into a literary wonderland with an array of engaging activities that captivated hearts and minds. The occasion was the enchanting World Book Day, a celebration that brought together literature enthusiasts from all corners of our school. From classrooms to corridors, the air was filled with excitement and the unmistakable scent of adventure that only a good book can bring.
Book Cover and Bookmark Design Competition
It was a pre-WBD event for Grades 6-11 students, they made a hands-on mixed media design to recreate the novel that had been read in their English class, and otherwise the bookmark could be based on the novel or their aesthetic own-creation.
All the artwork is shown at the exhibition booth which includes the World Book Day Tour.
The winner of the best design gets a prize at the MSHS Assembly.
World Book Day Tour and varied activities
The tour is scheduled for three days 28 February - 1 March centered in the Art Lobby, so that every class can explore the literary journey. It starts with a photo booth, comic strips booth, book cover and bookmark exhibition, book fair, and food trucks. The house games in ES were also a huge success!
Parent Storytellers
The arrival of the parent storytellers thrilled the EYES students. From traditional folktales to contemporary adventures, the parent storytellers transported our eager readers to the world beyond the pages of their textbooks. The enchanting narratives sparked lively discussions and fostered a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling.
Book Character Costume
The highlight of our World Book Day celebration was undoubtedly the vibrant Book Character Costume Day on the second day. From the classic characters of Alice in Wonderland to the modern heroes like Harry Potter, the diversity of costumes showcased the vastness of the literary universe. It was heartwarming to see the joy on their faces as they shared their literary inspirations.
Author virtual talks and performance
In the afternoon of the second day, we were honored to invite the Author Michelle Kadarusman virtually in the MSHS Assembly to share her writing journey and insight with our students. The live-streaming interview was an interactive session that allowed students to ask questions, gain valuable insights into the world of writing, and perhaps sparked the flame of creativity in some budding writers among us.
Illustrator visit
To add an extra layer of inspiration, we were honored to host an illustrator visit, Evelyn Ghozalli with the pseudonym EorG, who shared her illustration journey and insight with our Grades 4-5 students. She added an illustration activity at the end for students and donated some of her books to our library.
As we reflect on these three days filled with literary joy, we are reminded of the profound impact that books have on our lives. The celebration of World Book Day was not just about the stories themselves, but about the shared experience of exploring new worlds, fostering creativity, and building a community that values the magic of words.
The library team extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the students, parents, and staff who contributed to making this World Book Day celebration a resounding success. Let’s continue to nurture the love for reading and storytelling, creating a culture where the magic of words continues to thrive.
Health and Safety Update
It is a standard procedure in SWA to conduct a whole school general cleaning every weekend, however, we would like to update you of the extra measures that were implemented especially during sensitive periods such as flu season, and the like. Deep cleaning operations are of utmost importance at this time and we thank our cleaning services and SWA staff for the maximum effort exerted and close monitoring of all the buildings to ensure that our school is safe and clean.
Cleanliness is simply not the absence of dirt but a characteristic of the people or users. Let us do our share. Let us respect the surroundings and practise personal hygiene wherever we may be. Wearing masks is encouraged for the safety of oneself and others, and it's also essential to prioritise routine handwashing at all times.

SWA Literacy Programme
Your partner in building a strong foundation in English literacy skills is here. Join the SWA Literacy Programme! The SWA Literacy Programme features JOLLY PHONICS for ages 3-6. It is a comprehensive programme that employs a child-centred and multisensory approach to teaching the 42 sounds of the alphabet, which motivates children to build words as early as possible.
The programme is also offered to Elementary School students aged 7-11 years old. In this programme, literacy skills, (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), are further developed through exposure to stories of various genres. The language exercises are combined with activities that focus on comprehension skills (eg. summarising, inferencing, comparing and contrasting) that they can apply to all reading situations.
