Things I Can Control vs Things I Can’t Control
Written by Ms. Lindi
Teenagers are very self-conscious. They compare themselves with others easily and perceive what people say about them. While teenagers are developing their way of thinking, social skills and emotional regulations, the world evolves so quickly it makes them feel overwhelmed easily.
Teenagers use social media as their main guidebook for self-development, but at the same time social media provides information that might be unnecessary or inappropriate for them to know. Social media runs so fast and their contents are unlimited, in the other hand, teenagers don’t have the skills to filter what is good and right for them only. This condition happens with other aspects of life, which is why the world is too big for teenagers to handle.
Focusing on teenagers' strengths, abilities, and skills will help them take control of their lives and improve their well-being. Practising how to respond to other people’s reactions and how to solve problems will help them navigate challenging situations.

SEAMO
The Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) is an internationally renowned platform designed to enhance students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through rigorous training and competition, SEAMO inspires young minds to develop the abilities necessary for academic excellence and future workplace success.
At SWA, competition training is a cornerstone of our enrichment program, reflecting our commitment to fostering a love for mathematics and critical thinking among students.
This year, 37 SWA students participated in the competition, demonstrating remarkable resilience on a challenging paper.
Notable achievements included Gold Medal 🥇 Nicole (Grade 2) and AJ (Grade 2), Silver Medals 🥈 earned by Hadasah (Grade 1) and Hugh (Grade 4), along with Bronze Medals 🥉 awarded to Breythan (K2), Stanley (K2), Arabella (Grade 1), Yunji (Grade 2), Yasa (Grade 2), Sieun (Grade 2), Aaron (Grade 2), Wayne (Grade 3), Xinyue (Grade 3)
Reflecting on their SEAMO experience, Nicole (Grade 2), a Gold Medalist, shared, “SEAMO was both challenging and fun. I learned how to think differently and solve tricky problems, and it made me feel more confident about maths!” Her words highlight the positive impact of such competitions on young learners, boosting their skills and confidence.
These talented students now advance to the prestigious SEAMO X Final Round, scheduled for January 17–20, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This international event will feature the top 40% of participants from regional rounds, including all Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awardees. Competitors will face complex problems designed to test their mathematical aptitude and critical-thinking prowess. Winners will receive medals, certificates, and a place in the SEAMO Hall of Fame, marking a significant milestone in their academic journeys.
The success of SWA students in SEAMO highlights the importance of nurturing problem-solving and analytical skills. Competitions like SEAMO not only prepare students for challenging environments but also instil essential life skills such as resilience and discipline. As these students gear up for future competitions, their achievements inspire their peers and exemplify the transformative power of dedication and critical thinking in shaping future leaders.

Health and Safety Update
It is a standard procedure in SWA to conduct a whole school general cleaning every weekend. However, we would like to update you on the additional measures implemented, especially during sensitive periods such as flu season. Deep cleaning operations are currently a top priority, and we extend our gratitude to our cleaning services team and SWA staff for their dedicated efforts and vigilant monitoring of all buildings to ensure our school remains a safe and hygienic environment.
Cleanliness is more than just the absence of dirt; it reflects the habits of those who use the space. Let us each do our part by respecting our surroundings and practising personal hygiene wherever we are. Wearing masks is encouraged to protect both yourself and others, and it is essential to prioritise proper handwashing at all times for everyone’s safety.
